Give the Territorial Acknowledgment
You may be asked to give the Territorial Acknowledgment. When giving a Territorial Acknowledgment online, you acknowledge the territory where you are currently located. It is also respectful to acknowledge or show appreciation for the territory where you are located by mentioning something that you admire or find interesting about the people and the territory where you reside.
The following is an example of a Territorial Acknowledgment that you may adapt:
“I raise my hands (palms facing up at about shoulder height) in honour and respect to the Songhees and Lekwungen people for allowing me onto their traditional territory. I fear for the potential loss of their traditional language left because there is only one native speaker left in the territory. I am hopeful because they are working to preserve the language for future generations.”
